National Youth Choir of Wales

During the start of the summer holidays I was invited along with 2 other pupils from Penweddig to represent Wales with the National Youth Choir of Wales. I was a soprano in the choir and Guto Lewis and Tom Kendall were tenors.

Following the audition process in January we were invited to attend the residential course in Lampeter’s University Campus where we were taught by a team of experienced musicians. We learnt various pieces of music in 5 different languages! Our repertoire included the works of Debussy, Eric Whitacre and Dilys Elwyn-Edwards.I personally learnt a lot about singing technique from my tutor Fflur Wyn. Despite the long hours of practising there were plenty of time to relax and socialise in the many events organised by the welfare team including sports, karaoke and fancy dress nights.

The highlight of the course was the chance to tour around Wales performing our pieces in amazing locations including St David’s Cathedral, Hereford Cathedral and St David’s Hall Cardiff. This year was the first time that the choir and orchestra collaborated. Together we performed the Chichester Psalms by Bernstein conducted by one of the best conductor’s in the world, Carlo Rizzi. It was an amazing experience and I’ve made many new friends from all over Wales. I’d like to thank all the staff at National Youth Arts Wales for their hard work organising and running the course and tour!
